Kathmandu (Pahichan) February 11 – National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has written a letter to government asking to implement the report and Supreme Court (SC) verdict concerning same-sex marriage. The letter states that government without any delay should implement the verdict made by the court on 2064 BS Poush 6, and a report on same-sex marriage submitted a year ago.

“Some state mechanisms are against the provisions of same-sex marriage, we have written a letter to government to initiate the process of legalizing same-sex marriage,” said Basudev Bajgain, Human right office of Commission.”There is a need of spreading campaign to create awareness about this community.”

He, however, said NHRC is less known about people with inter-sex. He said NHRC would also work in favor of this community. He said that people with inter-sex are facing discrimination within the LGBTI community.

He said NHRC would create pressure on government to implement the constitutional provisions. Under Secretary at Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare Bharat Sharma said ministry has already begun consultations and discussions about this community. Sharma informed that they are preparing to impart vocational trainings to the members of this community.

Upama Malla, UNICEF representative said due to forceful surgery of inter-sex people they are facing difficulties. She underlined the need of creating awareness to end the violence against this community.

Prem Bahadur Thapa said it is a matter of shame that law has not been formulated according to court verdict. He said it is unfortunate that sexual orientation has been deleted from the constitution. Human Right project of UNDP James Brayan informed that efforts are underway to collect assistance for this community.

Executive Director of BDS said every government should accommodate the rights of inter-sex people. He requested to inform media people and general people about this community. Chairman of BDS Pinky Gurung said the two-day seminar has helped to identity the issues and there is a need of bringing the members of this community in the leadership.

She asked to make their identity open. Deputy Director of BDS Parshu Ram Rai said people with inter-sex are facing discrimination from their early stage. He informed that they are spreading awareness about this community. Inter-sex Ishan Regmi said that there is a need of informing doctors about the problems of this community. “Due to the surgery in the early years, they are in risks,” said Regmi.
