Kathmandu (Pahichan) February 15 – Government has sought view of Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, and Ministry of Law regarding the same-sex marriage. Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has sought the views of these two concerned ministries within three days. Nepal, in the meeting of Universal Periodic Report in 1015 November 4, has expressed commitments regarding same-sex marriage and other 16 different issues.
According to Kamal Shali Ghimire, a Secretary at Prime Minister’s Office, government will have to give response to UN within March 16. “We are hopeful that we will receive the response of those ministries within Sunday,” said Ghimire. The UPR meeting takes place in every four years.
Parshuram Rai, Deputy Director of Blue Diamond Society has taken part in the meeting. “We had recommended five issues underlining the need of urgent implementation which including the formulation of rape law which would give to the victims to homosexual and legalizing same-sex marriage,” said Rai. Spain, Brazil, Sweden, Israel had advised Nepal to legalize same-sex marriage stating that Nepal has done well for the welfare of this community. During UPR meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa has said that Nepal would give answers within March. After ministries furnish the details, government plans to hold discussions.
