Kathmandu (Pahichan) April 26 – Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society Manisha Dhakal has deplored the killing the editor of Bangladhesh’s first LGBIT Magazine, who was also USAID worker. Xulhaz Manan was killed on Monday which has invited international condemnation.
Speaking to Pahichan, Dhakal said it is the responsibility of Bangladesh government to ensure the security of all citizens including gender and sexual minority. She expressed solidarity in the movement of LGBTI in Bangladesh. Dhakal said the security of LGBTI community has been a challenging job in Bangladesh.
Ansar al-Islam, the Bangladeshi division of al Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, claimed responsibility for the killings in Bangladesh’s capital. The claim was made in a statement distributed on social media.
A statement from USAID, an American government agency for poverty prevention, identified the slain editor as Xulhaz Mannan. “Today, USAID lost one of our own,” it said.
“He was the kind of person willing to fight for what he believed in, someone ready to stand up for his own rights and the rights of others,” USAID Administrator Gayle Smith said in a statement. There are the feared that killings could spread the psychology of insecurity in south Asia.
