BDS submits a letter to SAARC and Bangladesh protesting the killing of LGBTI Activist

Kathmandu (Pahichan) May 9 – The supporters of LGBTI in Nepal on Monday submitted a letter to Embassy of Bangladesh and SAARC secretariat in Kathmandu expressing a grave concern over the brutal killing of prominent well known LGBTI Activist and journalist Xulhaz Mannan and fellow activist Mohbub Tonoy.

Submitting a letter, Blue Diamond Society said recent killing in Bangladesh of famous LGBTI activists is a clear that Human rights are myth there. A team (staffs and members of this community) led by Deputy Director of Blue Diamond Society Parshu Ram Rai drew the attention of Bagladesh embassy with the signatures of the members.

“We are always with LGBTI community irrespective of where they live and our LGBTI sisters, brother and friends to enjoy freedom and equal rights regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity. We urge the concern authority to raise voice to assured that LGBTI rights are protected with in its member nation,” the letter reads.

Unlike other south Asian counterparts notably Pakistan and Bangladesh here in Nepal, the sexual and gender minority communities are constitutionally recognized and has started enjoying a lot of the human rights that are entitled to every citizens of Nepal, especially after Nepal’s Supreme Court’s decision in Dec 2007.The court affirmed sexual and gender minority people are natural and deserve equal rights and opportunities.

Further, the letter highlights LGBTI rights are basic Human Rights and it is the duty of every country to reaffirm basic human rights of everyone where ever they domicile. LGBTI communities irrespective of where they live are our LGBTI sisters, brother and friends to enjoy freedom and equal rights regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The LGBTI community has requested to raise voice, and assure that LGBTI rights are protected with in its member nation.
