LGBTI community over the selection of independent expert on LGBTI : Dhakal

Kathmandu (Pahichan) January 8 – Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society Manisha Dhakal has expressed the happiness over the selection of independent experts on LGBTI in United Nations. Speaking to Pahichan, Dhakal said after the selection of Bhitit Mutabron, minority groups are feeling secure across the globe.

“UN is a big and prestigious organization, selection of independent exports,” Dhakal said adding that there will be concerns on LGBTI from across the country. She said despite the selection of independent expert, it does not mean that violence against LGBTI has ended ‘ but having independent expert create  hope to end violence against lgbti.We all need to support him’. She said Nepal’s image at international arena has improved after it voted in favor of selection of independent experts. Dhakal said it is a matter of happiness for the members of LGBTI across the globe.

There was widespread criticisms of Nepal as it stayed absent in the first round of selection of independent experts.  “We want to thank National Human Rights and other organizations for creating an environment,” Dhakal said. After the pressure from LGBTI community, Nepal also voted in favour of selection of independent panel.

In January 2016, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Uruguay jointly brought the proposal for the selection of independent experts. The proposal was endorsed by majority while 18 countries voted against it. The African Union brought a proposal against it on November 21. There was pressure on Nepal government to vote in favour of the formation of independent experts. Nepal is favouring other issues on GLTNI such as budget allocation and providing rights.
