Govt to introduce special laws to address the same-sex marriage

Kathmandu (Pahichan) February 25 – As government prepares to address same-sex marriage through special provisions, it has been revealed that Legislative Committee of Parliament has not incorporated this issue.

Lawmaker Radheshyam Adhikari who worked as coordinator of sub-committee formed under the main committee has revealed that it was omitted following the request from government. “This is a new issue in Nepal.

Therefore we held discussions in the committee and sub-committee level with various stakeholders,” he said, adding that Ministry of law suggested preparing a separate law on legalizing same-sex marriage. At that time, Tek Prasad Dhungana was Law Secretary and Law Minister was UML Leader Agni Prasad Kharel.

He said it is a positive that Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare has formed a committee to prepare a draft on legalizing same-sex marriage. He said special law is beneficial and there will not be any problem on dispensing the justice.

He said members of this community can take the benefit of both laws. “The issues of this community have emerged strongly so that there is a need of addressing the issues of this community,” Adhikari said. He said Supreme Court has given a interpretation about this community and there is a need of formulating special laws.
