Nepal is a LGBTI friendly country: Minister Khadka

Kathmandu (Pahichan) May 20- Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Kumar Khadka has said that Nepal is among few countries in the world which is LGBTI friendly. Speaking at a function organized to mark International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, Minister Khadka said Nepal is an example for other countries when it comes to securing the rights of gender and sexual minority.

The Minister said though he lacks sufficient knowledge about the members of this community; he understands the problems faced by this community.

“We are linked with United Nations and Blue Diamond Society. I do not have sufficient knowledge but members of this community are facing a lot of discrimination,” said Khadka. “However, I am speaking with a pride that Nepal is among few countries which has guaranteed the constitutional rights of gender and sexual minority,” said Khadka.

He said a law has not been formulated to strengthen the constitutional rights. Minister Khadka said that it has been six years since Nepal started issuing citizenship and passport on the basis of the identity. He said number of LGBTI population is large in Nepal. Member of National Human Rights Commission Mohana Ansari said the rights of LGBTI are the rights of all and there should not be discrimination
