Once again, @ConchitaWurst proves to be an absolute hero and a role model. When a stand needs to be taken, you can always rely on her/Tom to do the right thing not just for them but for many 1000s of others who cannot speak out. #HERO
Kathmandu (Pahichan) April 17 – Fans of Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst have shared messages of support for the singer after she was ‘forced’ to reveal her HIV status.
The singer shared a message on Instagram confirming she is HIV+, but says she only told fans after threats from an ex-partner.
“I have been hiv-positive for many years,” she wrote.
“This is actually irrelevant to the public, but an ex-boyfriend is threatening to go public with this private information. I will not give anyone the right to frighten me or affect my life.”
Her first statement was made in German on Instagram.
In a second statement, Conchita Wurst confirmed she has been on treatment for several years. She is now undetectable and cannot pass on the HIV virus.
“Until now, I did not want to go public with this information for a number of reasons, only two of which I’ll mention,” she added.
“It is information that, in my opinion, is almost exclusively relevant to those with whom sexual contact would be an option”
“First and foremost my family, who know everything and have been supporting me since day one. I would have gladly spared them the attention connected to the hiv-status of their son, grandson and brother.
“Likewise, my friends have been aware of this for quite some time and are dealing with it with an impartiality, that I would wish everyone concerned.
“Secondly, it is information that, in my opinion, is almost exclusively relevant to those with whom sexual contact would be an option.”
Conchita’s statement, and the actions of her ex, has drawn criticism from the Terrence Higgins Trust.
“The decision to talk openly about your HIV status should be a personal one and not taken away or ever, ever used as a threat,” says Ian Green, CEO of the trust.
“Threatening to reveal someone’s HIV status, under any circumstances, is entirely wrong”
“Threatening to reveal someone’s HIV status, under any circumstances, is entirely wrong. What other health condition would be used as blackmail against someone? And we know this isn’t something which only happens to those in the public eye.
“Despite all the medical advances we’ve made in the fight against HIV, in treatment and in testing, Conchita’s Instagram post highlights how much more we have to do to tackle the abhorrent stigma which still surrounds the virus.”
He also says the trust “applauds” Conchita for how she handled the situation – and fans have done likewise.
Ben says conchita Wurst is a “hero and a role model.”
Daniel says he is “proud” of her bravery.
Rob says she is an “absolute inspiration” for how she has handled the situation.
Conchita thanked her fans for their support in her statement and reassured them about her health.
“To my fans: the information about my hiv status may be new to you – my status is not,” she wrote.
“I’m well and well, and I’m stronger, more motivated and liberated than ever. Thank you for your support.”
