Kahtmandu (Pahichan) July 23 – Altogether 1500 members of gender and sexual minority have received citizenship as per their gender identity. The large number of people took citizenship following Supreme Court verdict and circular issued by Ministry of Home Affairs. Out of 1500, 177 have received citizenship mentioning third gender. 1300 people have mentioned Other (O) in gender section.
The information received by Pahichan from Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed that 1500 people have received citizenship as per gender identity. Ministry of Home Affairs has kept the record of all districts.
However, Ministry has said that it would take time to prepare complete report. In 2064 BS, Supreme Court has issued directed to provide citizenship as per gender identity. Following court order, Ministry of Home Affairs issued circular to district administration offices to provide citizenship.
Ministry of Home Affairs has made it clear that no other additional documents are required to get citizenship. “All citizens have right to get citizenship as per their gender identity and citizenship is not provided on the basis of body structure,” said Ram Krishna Subedi, Spokesperson at Ministry of Home Affairs.
There are still issues related to citizenship of this community. State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament is discussing on draft of citizenship bill.
