Minister Gurung maintains silence on LGBTI issues

Kathmandu (Pahichan) February 29 – Government has said that society remains incomplete if sexual and gender minority is excluded. Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen who came up with 17-page document to show the progress of his 100 days in office, did not mention even a single word about this community.

However, responding to a question, Gurung said society remains incomplete if this community is excluded. “I was trying to reducing the pages with a view that document has been long.” Though document was long, there was no mentioning of the minority community.

Journalists asked him questions saying that Ministry does not care about this community though constitution has cemented their rights. Minister, however, defended himself saying that Ministry is responsible about the rights of this community.  But, Ministry has not done anything about addressing the demands of LGBTI community.

A committee on same-sex marriage is gathering dust at Ministry since six years but Minister Gurung did not responded any questions on it. He, however, said that demands of same-sex marriage will be addressed. The issue of sexual and gender minority is a key priority of Ministry but it seems that newly appointed Minister is taking this issue in a light way.
