Kathmandu (Pahichan) July 23 – Nepal Bar Association has said that it is committed for the promotion and protection of rights concerning gender and sexual minorities in the new constitution. The apex professional body of lawyers made such commitment in a letter dispatched by General Secretary Sunil Pokhrel to Chairman of Blue Diamond Society Pinki Gurung and rights Campaigner Sunil Babu Pant.

He said Bar Association has not only suggested removing the sexual orientation in the new constitution. He said Bar has provided several suggestions on draft constitution. “There may be some people who have traditional mindset, however, we are committed and clear to protect the rights of sexual and gender minorities,” the letter dispatched by Pokhrel reads.

He also said Bar is always ready to hold discussions on the same issue. This community has already expressed the reservation over the suggestion provided by Bar to remove the sexual orientation. According to sources, Bar Vice-President Tika Ram Bhattarai pressed to remove the world from the draft constitution. “Bhattarai took a firm stance so that Bar made such decisions,” according to sources.

When the Bar submitted suggestions to CA Chairman Subas Nembang, Bar Chairman Hari Krishna Karki was absent. Karki has already said that he was not awareness about the suggestions provided by Bar.  “Bar Chairman has expressed ignorance about the objection suggestions,” said Executive Director of BlueDiamond Society Manisha Dhaka.
